AguaClara LLC Awarded at World Water Week in Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden. August 30, 2016. Today, AguaClara LLC, a sustainable water treatment company based in Ithaca, was awarded second place in the RELX Group Environmental Challenge at World Water Week in Sweden. This prize is awarded to organizations working to advance sustainable access to safe water or improved sanitation around the world. Winners successfully demonstrated that their solutions were not only innovative, but also replicable, sustainable, and scalable.

Once a year, leading players in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene sector, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and World Health Organization, gather for World Water Week hosted by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI). The theme for this year’s World Water Week is “Water for Sustainable Growth.” AguaClara LLC was selected for the RELX Group Environmental Challenge for designing systems that use locally-available materials, can be operated by community members without a technical background, and do not require any electricity to run.

Later this year, Maysoon Sharif, managing director and co-founder of AguaClara LLC, will travel to India to work with NGO Gram Vikas to pilot an innovative technology to disinfect drinking water in two villages in the state of Odisha. Sharif has a vision of bringing AguaClara technologies to more countries in Asia and Latin America. As part of that effort she hopes to expand AguaClara LLC’s Ithaca office to have a core team of engineer-trainers who travel abroad to partner with international NGOs to deploy the systems. “We want to keep pushing the limits of who we can help. From small villages to midsize towns, we want to increase access to safe drinking water on tap to improve the quality of life for people around the world.

AguaClara LLC delivers low cost gravity-powered water treatment systems to underserved communities worldwide. In 2014, the company was named a certified B-corporation for its exceptional social and environmental practices, and a year later was named to B-corp’s “Best for the World Overall” list. AguaClara recently partnered with Indian NGO Pradan to implement small-scale treatment plants providing clean water on tap to 2000 people across four villages in Jharkhand, India.
